DARK MATTER

I first heard Leonard Cohen when I was in my late teens. I thought at the time what a great poet he was, but a lousy singer. Well, lousy singing, as with everything else, is not only subjective, but open to change down the road. With the blessing of age, like a fine antique casket of wine, Leonard`s voice became deeper, darker, & full of wonderful events happening, like the explosion of fireworks on a clear night. He was a lifelong seeker of the spirit; his song arrangements have always travelled light, full of killer lines set within a sparse, uncluttered structure, that showcases perfectly the meaning of words & truth, without overwhelming them in an avalanche of over the top production so prevalent in modern music. I guess if a fitting epitaph to a life well spent can be found, then its his 2016 release, You Want It Darker album. The final hurrah of a genuine maestro who could never be pinned to the mast of convention & uniformity. Originality is the essence of genius – & he had a planet sized talent full of it.
